Ashtanga Yoga is a classical method of Hatha Yoga that was advised and outlined by an ancient Indian sage, Vamana Rishi, in the Yoga Korunta.
It is renowned for its dynamic, flowing yoga-asana sequences. Asanas are performed in a specific sequence, with each asana unfolding into the next in a continuous cycle. Asanas are linked by vinyasa (synchronised movement breathing system), and involve the application of bandhas (specific muscular activations to create energy seals), drishtis (gaze/focus points) and the calming ujjayi breath.
The purpose of vinyasa is for internal cleansing. The combination of breathing and movement creates heat (and sweat!), which aids in purifying first the body, and in later stages the nervous system and mind. Ultimately, the light of our own inner Selves will be revealed.
With persevering practice, Ashtanga Yoga creates a healthy, strong and supple body, and a calm, focussed mind.
