11 steps to Sustainable Living
Educate yourself.
Attend the Natural and Organic Products Exhibition at the Cape Town Convention Centre (19-21 February 2010).
Eat smart.
Shop for fresh, locally grown organic produce on a regular basis and only purchase what you need. Where you can, grown your own.
Select natural medicines.
Take natural supplements and remedies. For example, tea tree oil can be used as an effective anti-fungal for athlete’s foot, as an anti-viral to treat cold sores and as an anti-septic for cuts.
Beautify yourself, naturally.
For your personal grooming and hygiene, choose products free of harmful chemicals, artificial fragrances and dyes. Use essential oils to treat stress and insomnia, muscle pains, stiff joints and acne.
Clean Green.
Clean your home with natural products containing organically grown plant ingredients that are completely biodegradable. Avoid toxic chemicals that damage our water, soil and wildlife.
Dress and decorate responsibly.
Buy natural and organic cotton and hemp fabrics made using environmentally sustainable manufacturing processes and that support local communities.
Travel Light.
Get around on foot, bike and public transport as much as possible. Rideshare with friends. Switch to a hybrid car, electric vehicle or other environmentally sensible transport. Use biodiesel fuel.
Drink organic wine.
Purchase wine made from grapes grown with no chemical fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides. Join a select group of local wine producers at the organic wine garden being hosted at the Natural & Organic Products Exhibition in Cape Town (19-21 February 2010).
Reduce. Re-Use. Recycle.
Minimise how much garbage you throw out and reuse resources wherever possible. ‘Waste’ should be viewed as a resource to recycle or to be used to create compost.
Get involved.
Join organisations that are experts in making a difference to the health of the planet and meet with others about what you can do to make your community more sustainable.
Filter your water.
Rather than buying numerous plastic bottles, filter water from your tap at home and fill used bottles (preferably glass bottles) to keep yourself hydrated with a minimum of eight glasses of water each day,
