Yoga4Kids Teacher Training and Voluntary Service in Diepsloot and Benoni

Service in Yoga: Follow up to Special Kundalini Yoga Workshop for teachersSuzie Manson visited the Zizanani Woman and Youth Project in Diepsloot where she met the most incredible Glynnis Van Halter.

Over the last 15 years Glynnis has, with the help of the Union of Jewish Woman and other such organisations, been able to build a school for 500 children from Grade 0 upwards. She and her volunteers not only keep kids off the streets, but are involved in projects amongst others such as providing food and education for most of these orphaned and/or HIV infected children; she established a craft centre and has introduced high school and older children to trades such as dancing, drumming and music, enabling them to pass on these trades to the village children.

The Headmistresses of both the pre-primary and primary school are very interested in bringing yoga to these children in the classroom and as an extra-mural activity. Children’s yoga teacher training will be offered one week-end in their school gym.  Claire Buck has offered to go every Friday to the school to teach the teachers yoga so that their practice and awareness of the yoga postures, breathing and principles is continually updated and improved. They can then be better yoga teachers to the children while benefiting from their own practice.

Glynnis suggested that we also bring yoga to the Diepsloot youth already involved in learning new trades, so that they may then have something else to offer the youth in the townships who are not able to attend this school, creating a ripple effect. Suzie will keep us posted on our developments in Diepsloot.

Any Benoni based teachers able to continue Suzie’s and Glynis Overmeyer’s good work with the children at the KidsHaven Shelter in Benoni should also please contact Suzie, as given travel time and cost, they are no longer able to travel out there on a weekly basis.

A person who is a master in the art of living makes little distinction between their work and their play, their labour and their leisure, their mind and their body, their education and their religion.

They hardly know which is which and simply pursue their vision of excellence and grace, whatever they do.  Leaving others to decide whether they are working or playing.  To them they are always doing both”  Anonymous
