Coffee Makes You Stiff (Hinders flexibility)
Here’s a quick stretching tip: drink fresh juice instead of coffee, tea, or sodas and watch your flexibility improve within 36 hours.
I’m serious. Sound too simple? Get this: caffeine sucks the water out of your system, fries your nerves, and makes you tense. Let me put it this way: dry, tense, over-stimulated bodies are, without fail, stiff and tight every time. If you really need a pick-me-up, do a 3-5 minute headstand. It beats the hell out of Grande cup of Sumatran espresso any time.
Strength or flexibility
In yoga, most students either go the flexibility route or the strength route - it’s in our nature to choose one or the other… but it doesn’t have to be. Actually, strength AND flexibility work best, hand-in-hand. The yang and yin. Now this is me, saying this with hindsight.
For years, I didn’t care about strength, partially because I struggled with it. I’m still a pretty tiny guy, but I’ve discovered some dietary “tricks” that have made a big difference. Honestly, I’m getting much stronger. Granted, I’m not about to join Cirque Du Soleil (now those are some insane inversions!) but I’m improving by leaps and bounds upside down.
