By Hayley Alexander

A Stress Busting Yoga Day was held at the ISHTA Centre in Atholl on Saturday 17th October, presented by Kundalini yoga teacher Pritam Khalsa, who gave a two hour class on Yoga Kriyas for connecting to the third and fifth chakras, which is where we hold on to most of our tension. Kriya (the Sanskrit root of the word is ‘doing’) can be explained as the spontaneous fulfilment of action through the engagement of asana that links one’s infinite self to this finite moment.

Combining pranayama with asana and mantra, the group worked together to create a harmony that resonated both externally and within, gradually allowing any stress to be released while consciously detoxifying and purifying the body-mind along with the subtle energies. The exercises work in an elegant, round-about manner to deliver a precise effect on body, mind and spirit.

A favourite amongst the Kriya techniques was the “Baboon Breath”, practised by first bouncing an imaginary ball, bringing the hands into Buddhi Mudra:(the pinky touches the thumb and the other three fingers are straight, eyes are closed); followed by making the hands into a fist and bringing the arms out to the sides, moving vigorously while breathing loudly to create a sound similar to that of a baboon.

Yogi Bhajan’s comments to this exercise: “Get this Monkey out of your mind and system. Don’t be shy . . . This will stimulate the parathyroid . . . and you will burn up your sick dreams and your memories. By playing that ball, you will be able to control the psycho-magnetic energy.”

With burning arms held straight out in front at shoulder height for seven minutes (which felt like seven hours!), the lesson concluded with the singing of Bountiful, Blissful, Beautiful allowing all those present to experience this perfect and wonderful state of being.
Thereafter everyone enjoyed cooling off outside while tucking in to a delicious buffet lunch catered by Free Foods. With all the heat created in the first-half of the day, the opening of the heavens was symbolic of all the stress being washed away.

Having satisfied the appetite, the second-half marked the time to celebrate! Led by Natalie Vlismas, the band SATYA performed a selection of their most popular Kundalini based tracks, encouraging group participation and socialisation games that made it impossible not to smile. The vibe was that of ecstasy blended with serenity to bring about a state of transcendence. Although it was only a one day workshop, there is no doubt that the effects will be long withstanding towards a greater sense of vitality, strength, love, acceptance, happiness and peace in our daily lives.

Sat Nam

Yoga for Stress

Some of our day-to day stressors build our capacity, our muscles and our teeth for life. But sometimes our ’stress monster’ gets so out of hand that we don’t know who we are anymore. That becomes a great pain of life when our authentic, royal, regal and sovereign self is dethroned or left forever undiscovered.
We deserve to be rid of that deep-seated stress to be able to look with all new eyes and so handle the diversity of life.
In this class we will work with the elements and enter the stress-free zone. All levels welcome - even if you have never practiced Kundalini Yoga .

Pritam Hari Kaur Khalsa teaches Kundalini Yoga and teacher training. She has published a picture book in yoga, called the Kundalini Yoga Fan.

She shares a wealth of knowledge in natural foods and healing through her and her husbands Har Bhajan’s brand, Fruits & Roots Natural Foods.

Satya Kirtan Group

Kirtan is the art of devotional music that invites us as a sangat, a congregation, to celebrate and praise source through chantIt is the

experience of the individual elevating to a state of merger. The gathering of

the voices around us draws us into our own experience and what we share with

the group. We might have felt that we cannot sing - but we can still chant!

We explore breath and voice to awaken our expression in this class of kirtan and chant.

SATYA has been chanting and sharing for the past two years and is focussed through the musical

excellence of Natalie Vlismas/ Siri Kirtan Kaur (voice, piano) and Gidon Lazarus (guitar) and friends.

The main theme of the Satyananda Yoga is awakening the faculties of the Head – Heart – Hands. The Head represents – your Intelligence, Wisdom, Observation, Knowledge, Awareness The Heart represents - your Feelings, Emotions, Sensations The Hands represent – the ability for you to Act, Create, Perform The ability to manage all 3 compartments of our life creates the balance which will make a person whole and complete – but of course still practicing the physical yoga for physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Yoga is a process of managing oneself. It is a lifestyle. If you are willing to change and adapt to that disciplined lifestyle – then you become a YOGI. Finally, Niranjan asks “What is the relevance of Yoga?”. The Answer: The moment we manage to handle our Intellect – Emotions – Actions, we give Evolution a chance in our life. Head, Heart and Hands is the theme in the 21st Century together with awareness of our spiritual nature. So if you want to experience the depth of Yoga, then immerse yourself in this idea: LIVE- LOVE- & LAUGH

Living Beyond Duality
For many, every step in life is filled with many questions and a lot of uncertainty. The haze can surround the simplest decisions, anywhere from, “What do I eat or wear today” - all the way to, “What is my life’s purpose?” Long term confusion leads us to sensory overload and often to discouragement and then depression. As we move into the Aquarian Age the need to stay centered will increase. Learning to hear the voice of our own soul’s direction and flow gives us a tool to overcome any internal duality. Together we’ll practice ancient Kundalini kriyas to set the stage for deep and powerful meditation, opening the ability to stay more centered in life. We will discover tools that will bring us the ability to hear beyond all the distractions around us so we might live in peace and happiness. Ending with dance, we’ll then relax to the Sacred Sound of the Gong, taking us beyond time and space. All Levels.
24th February 2010 (Session 2 Kundalini Immersion) 2-4pm
Diving for the Blue Pearl -Experience Transformation
Throughout the centuries, Kundalini Yoga was a secret only taught in the Himalayas to small groups of advanced yogis. Yogi Bhajan came to the West in 1969, and said the world needs this experience NOW. Kundalini Yoga unveils our world from the other worlds, and the window between spirit world and living world opens. It is our time to be in joy, give thanks and honour our ancient path. Please join us as we open to our subtle essence through asana, meditation, kriya, chanting, dancing and the healing sounds of the Sacred Gong. All Levels Welcome.

25th February 2010 (Session 3 Kundalini Immersion) 10-12pm
Moving from Karma to a Life of Dharma: Entering the Aquarian Age
For many, life is lived in a constant state of reaction and action likened to a roller coaster ride. However, at some point in our spiritual journey we realize there is more to our being and lives than this. Let us train ourselves to Act and not Re-act to all that occurs around us. Let us develop the habit to watch our lives as a series of events, just as we watch a movie. From this meditative perspective, we are free. We move from karma to dharma. We choose how we will proceed and perceive. Together we will realize that we do have the right to choose our own Reality using the tools of Kundalini Yoga, Chanting, Meditation, Dance and the Sound of the Sacred Gong. All Levels Welcome.

26th February 2010 (Session 4 Kundalini Immersion) 10-12pm
Training the Mind: A Life Beyond Our Fear as We Enter into the Golden Age.
Meditation is the basic key to a happy life. The nature of our mind is to create fear - it feels this will protect us! However, we have the choice to see above and beyond the fear, and the answer is: Meditation. If we meditate, the subconscious fear base will not leak into the conscious awareness. We will then live a clear and happy life. Join us as we prepare the body to be still and quiet. Through Kundalini Yoga and Meditation, let us move into the deeper realms of very ancient and sacred meditation techniques, giving us the ability to view our lives beyond time and beyond space. We will end with dance and relax to the sounds of the Sacred Gong. All Levels Welcome.

In many traditions you’ll find the concept of “Ishnaan” - sacred cleansing which leads us to a healthier body. Proper caring for the body is essential because it is the vessel in which our soul is carried. We can train ourselves to see our body as a Temple that carries a Sacredness within. Through the techniques of Kundalini Yoga, join us as we explore ways to relax, detoxify and open our bodies to the presence of divinity, ending with a very sacred meditative kriya and the sounds of the Gong.
Reality is What We Make of It.
Meditation has been going on in the world for thousands of years. Through our developed meditative mind, we can choose how we perceive the world. We can live in a state of Joy, so all that happens is an expansion of our soul’s touch with Infinity. Or we can see all that happens to us as a curse that leads us to hell. It’s really that much up to us. Through the techniques of Kundalini Yoga, join us as we explore and develop the potential of our Self to decide which path along the road we choose to travel.

24th, February 2010 (Session 1 Kundalini Immersion) 10-12pm

All Levels Welcome.

I liked yoga at first because of how it made my body feel, but within a few short years, yoga infiltrated every part of my existence. Because of the practice, I quit smoking, drinking, doing drugs and eating animal products. Because of the practice, I meditate, breathe, pray and serve. Yoga created the foundation that allows me to feel connected to spirit, the world and all her inhabitants. The concept of God no longer frightens me, for I learned that God is truth and love and exists in all moments, light and dark, and fully within each being. God is not something to be discovered, simply uncovered, and the journey of self-awakening will be unique for each soul. I believe this is exactly what Billy had wanted me to understand. We each have a “story” and karma that must be worked out. We each struggle, but we’ll eventually find our way to love, in God’s time. Don’t judge. Let God do his/her work, and have faith in the process. What Billy had told me simply, but masterfully, was that God is everywhere. We are all connected. We are all one. So remember to love.”Read the full story of Sean’s First lesson in Yoga as told on Oprah’s blog.
I was amazed by Seane’s open, unaffected, simple honesty and enthusiasm in Yoga. Her natural spirituality is unblemished by her high profile public persona. Her accomplishments are an integral part of her yogic lifestyle.
